Why does Guppy (Poecilia reticulata) need special food?
Ever since the time of my childhood, it has been in my head that the guppies are the most unpretentious fish in the aquarium. Which can survive in water with bleach, in aquariums without lighting and a heater. And even a fairly long time to do without food. But all these were my childhood delusions. In fact, in order to get the most beautiful fish, and to avoid problems when breeding in the form of various defects (for example, as in one of my early posts), Guppies (Poecilia reticulata) need to be fed often and varied. And it is advisable to use special feeds for these purposes. After all, the fish is so popular that almost all manufacturers of food for aquarium fish have food specially developed for Guppies.
Guppy (Poecilia reticulata) - a native of reservoirs of South America... By nature, fishes guppies are omnivores. In the wild, their diet consists of mosquito larvae, small bugs and crustaceans, small worms and algae. Therefore, when drawing up a diet for guppies, all this must be taken into account. And as the leading manufacturers write, they took all this and even more into account in the compositions of their feed. But is it? Let's get a look.
Feed for guppies from Hikari, Aquael и Tetra.
At my place, 3 of a kind of special food for guppies from different manufacturers from Germany, Poland and Japan was discovered. Two of them are made in the form of flakes (Tetra Guppy and Aquael Acti Guppy), and one in the form of granules (Hikari Fancy Guppy). Surprised me the most Aquael, and surprised everyone: color, smell and composition. And that's why.
Aquael ACTI Guppy.
Feed from Aquael It comes in blue packaging, which, according to the manufacturer, is no longer the main food, but food for fish with increased nutritional needs. And as they say on their website, the feed is based on larvae of aquatic insects, which were first frozen to -20 ° С, and then dried at + 60 ° С. For better coloring in fish, they added beta-carotene и astaxanthin. And even added a little sea salt, as guppies are often found in brackish waters and it has a positive effect on them. All this can be read on the official website on this link. But the composition of the feed itself with interest on the site is not, but it is on the bank. And something looks not so beautiful, as in the description on the site.
Aquael ACTI. Composition of feed.
So, in the composition of the feed we see:
- Fish flour.
- Soybean meal (soy flour).
- Flour from grains of cereals.
- Vitamins and antioxidants.
- food pigments
- Protein 48%
- Fat 6.1%
- Fiber 3.5%
- Calcium 1.9%
- Phosphorus 0.8%
Something frozen and dried larvae of insects here is not observed at all. Continuous flour. Or I did not look well.
Appearance and smell.
I was also very surprised by the color and smell of this feed. It is clear that many feed tint, but such bright colors I have not yet met. Yes, and the smell of food at a specific. More chemical than fish.
And although the fish eat this food well, after studying and writing this post, I decided to postpone a jar of this food for “rainy day”.
The next participant in our review, guppy food from one of the most common manufacturers of aquarium products, the company Tetra.
There is also little information on the manufacturer’s website, and the composition is not specified either. It is written only that the food is made in the form of small flakes especially for small mouths of fish. It also contains many herbal ingredients and minerals for taste and rapid growth.
And here's what you can see on the package:
- Extracts of vegetable protein.
- Shellfish and crawfish
- Oils and Fats
- 45 protein%
- Oils and Fats 8%
- Fiber 4%
- Moisture 8%
Appearance and smell.
Unlike feed Aquael, with color and smell everything is in order here. The color is quite natural, and the food has a slight smell of dried fish. Flakes float to the surface and then smoothly sink. Fish eat well and look happy!
Hikari FANCY GUPPY.
Guppy food Hikari Fancy Guppy is made in Japan, which may already hint at a decent quality product. Unlike the previous two feeds, this feed is made in the form of micro granules made using technology “SEMI-FLOATING”, Which translates as“ semi-floating ”or“ slowly sinking ”. The granules are small and soft, especially for fish with a small mouth. The granules also have a patented coating “Micro-Coating”, Which prevents them from quickly dissolving and spoiling the water. At the same time, keep all the useful ingredients inside the granule.
- Fish flour
- Wheat flour
- soy flour
- Flour from krill
- Brewer's yeast
- Dried yeast
- Fish fat
- Dried seaweed
- Hydrolyzed vegetable sucrose esters
- Fish fat
- Soybean oil
- Vitamins and Minerals
- 50 protein%
- Fat 8%
- Fiber 2%
- 10% humidity
- Ash 18%
Do not be scared if you see the word "Ash" in the composition of feed for any animals. It is not ash from burnt trees. Simply, in this way it is customary to designate the content of inorganic substances or minerals in the feed, such as potassium, calcium, phosphorus, iron, sodium, magnesium, zinc and other elements. All of them are necessary and very useful for the correct and rapid growth of your pets.
As we see, in terms of the composition and quantity of ingredients, this feed comes first.
Appearance and smell.
As for color and smell, this guppy feed looks the most natural. No unnatural colors. Yes, and it smells nicer than everyone, in my opinion. A faint smell of dried fish.
For myself, I concluded that if you want beautiful and healthy fish, then before buying the same feed, first read the information on the Internet, or read the composition on the package. After all, a lot depends on the feed, including coloring and the ability to reproduce. And do not forget that you need to feed the fish as diverse as possible. Including live and frozen feed. As well as natural vegetables. For example, cucumbers, zucchini or cabbage leaves. Well, periodically add vitamins to food. Then the fish will be brightly colored, healthy and ready to breed. Just do not overfeed!
