Wallisneria (Vallisneria): Great Plant For Background! (My experience)

As I wrote before, I do not consider myself to be a fan of "complex" plants. Those who need special fertilizers, systems with C02 feed and expensive lighting. For me, plants should be beautiful and at the same time unpretentious. From the series "planted and forgotten."

And Wallisneria (Vallisneria) - fully meets my requirements. Not only is she beautiful, unusual in form, she is also very unpretentious. Thanks to the unusual shape of the leaves, size and rapid growth, vallisneria can perform another useful function in the aquarium. With its help, it is very easy to draw a back or side background in the aquarium. At the same time, practically do not use the useful width of the aquarium, leaving it for fish. The leaves of Valisneria are usually thin, long, and grow strictly vertically upwards. Thanks to the twisted leaves, only the spiral valysneria looks more voluminous.

Vallisneria - general information.

Vallisneria (Vallisneria) - perennial aquatic plant belonging to the genus Vodokrasovyh Hydrocharitaceae. Due to its unpretentiousness, it was able to conquer almost all freshwater reservoirs of the planet with a tropical and subtropical climate. It feels great, both in stagnant lakes and in fast rivers. The following species are most often found in aquariums: giant wallisneria, dwarf, American, spiral and others. In this case, the composition and description of species is constantly added and changed. And the fact that the same plant in reservoirs with different conditions of detention can look completely different adds to the difficulties with the exact definition of the species. It all depends on the lighting and chemical composition of the water.

Planting and growing.

Vallisneria is so unpretentious plant that you can not even describe the conditions for its maintenance. The beginner aquarists will grow and forgive the mistakes of almost any aquarium. The only thing that can be noted is that Wallisneria loves rather bright lighting, and in cold water (less than 20 ° C) it slows down significantly in growth. It should also be noted that all types of wallisneria do not like the presence of rust in water (If you suddenly have an aquarium with a metal frame), and may die from this. And to some other chemical elements, such as copper, it also has a very negative attitude. So be careful and read the instructions when adding drugs to the aquarium with vallisneria.

And further. Since vallisneria grows rather quickly and has long leaves, very soon it will cover with them the entire surface of the aquarium. Thus obscuring other plants and obstructing the access of oxygen. And although other resources do not recommend cutting them, we cut. The only thing you need to cut is not at right angles. Then the sheet looks natural and does not look cut off. In any case, try on a separate sheet first. If he does not turn yellow and begins to rot, then everything will be in order.

Propagation in the aquarium.

If the conditions for keeping vallisneria in your aquarium are suitable, you won’t have to think about how to propagate it. And you have to think about how often to thin out it and where to put new shoots later. Vallisneria can breed in two ways, but in the aquarium you can usually only see one (in my photo below), using a mustache. In this way, the plant can capture the entire area of the aquarium in a fairly short time.

Control the speed and density of the planting of vallisneria! We had a case when an adult long fin male of a scalare was stuck between the rear glass and dense thickets of gigantic vallisneria, could not swim and died.

Another method of reproduction is rare in aquariums. But that is why it is interesting. The fact is that Wallysneria has a male and female gender. And some plants bloom with female flowers on the surface of the water. And others bloom male flowers under water. Which then come off, float up and with the help of waves and wind are transferred to women, pollinating them. So seeds are obtained for distribution in new territories. But so far I have not seen this, and all the information about this is taken from the Internet. So if Wallisneria suddenly blooms in you, be sure to send a photo.
