Corridor Panda (Corydoras panda): How I Tried To Breed Bears In The Aquarium!

If you, like me, are a lover of fish from water of South America, then bottom fishes kind Corridoras (Corydoras,  just have to attend your aquarium! Catfish of Corydoras, the same symbol of the Amazon River, as well as everyone's favorite scalar. In addition, there are more than 160 species. And this is only studied and described. Plus as much, and maybe even more to be studied. So choose suitable for your aquarium catfish from the genus of Corydoras will not be difficult.

As for me, since I prefer dark tones in the design of the aquarium, for contrast I got myself a flock of Corydoras Panda catfishes

Like most catfish of Corydoras, Panda Cory are the sweetest aquarium creatures. I believe many will agree with me that they have no minuses, and there are very many pluses.

  • They are peaceful and very friendly.
  • Unpretentious and hardy.
  • Absolutely indifferent to plants and do not spoil them.
  • Eat the remains of food that has fallen to the bottom, thereby maintaining the purity of the aquarium.
  • Very active and funny. Do not hide in the day time, so it's interesting to watch them.
  • In aquariums, you will be happy to see them more than 10 years.

Somikov Panda catfishes, it is almost impossible not to recognize or confuse with other species. They are small in size, but with a very memorable coloring of the body. On a light, almost white body, there are three large black spots. Just like the real bears Panda catfishes. Thanks to these spots, they got their name. The body length reaches 5-5.5 cm (1,96-2,1 inches). Female larger and look more well-nourished and rounded. Around the mouth are 3 pairs of antennae.

An interesting fact from personal experience. Fish look very good on the black soil, but over time, for the purpose of masking change the color of the body from light to dark. Color - coffee with milk. Therefore, if you want bright white fish, keep them in an aquarium with light soil.

Corydoras Panda. Keeping.

Like most species of Corydoras, keeping of Pandas does not cause any problems. There are no special special requirements for their content. The only thing that in nature they inhabit the sources of rivers in the mountains Andes, so catfish used to cooler water. In spring, after melting snow, the water temperature may drop to + 16 ° C (60,8 ° F). In addition, such water is content with mild and rich in oxygen. But since most catfish have already been born in aquariums, and well adapted, the temperature to + 28 ° C (82,4 ° F) and other changes in the composition of water they tolerate with ease. Still, like the rest of the catfish, Panda Cory they know how to breathe open air. They do not have a labyrinth organ, like the Dwarf Gourami, and the air is digested through the digestive system. So do not be surprised and do not worry when the fish will periodically rise to the surface and swallow the air. Everything is alright with them!

❗When transporting catfish of the genus Corydoras, do not pump in packages of water, pure oxygen. Like labyrinth fishes, they can burn themselves internal organs.

A natural food in the nature of these fish is considered a tube maker. Therefore, they eat it, as well as the moth and cortex, with great pleasure. Both live and frozen. In general, Pandas are omnivores in aquariums and are accustomed to all types of food, including dry. The main thing is to feed fell to the bottom. Tablets for catfish are perfect.

More peaceful and livable fish than Corydoras, find it difficult. You can keep it with any, less friendly and not aggressive species. Somiki occupy their level near the bottom and do not usually interfere with anyone. Even the large Scalarias do not pay absolutely no attention to them. The only thing to consider is that Panda Cory very social fish, so keep them only in a flock.

Breeding. What happened in my case.

Corydoras pand and green plant can be seen in this photo. Somiki panda play in this photo.
The pandas play.

It is believed that catfish breeding Panda catfishes somewhat more complicated than other members of the genus. And the general recommendations are as follows. We put the flock in a separate aquarium. Since these catfish prefer to lay eggs on plants, especially moss, we add that too. We feed abundantly with live or frozen food. Then we change the water to cool and soft. For them, this means the arrival of spring and serves as a signal for spawning.

I tried to do everything according to the rules, but I did not notice any caviar or any changes in the behavior of the Pandas. I decided to postpone this business, and launched the grown Danio fry into the aquarium with our Corridors. Helena's predatory snails and a group of shrimps successfully settled there. At the same time, the soil siphon and glass cleaning were carried out several times. That is, the conditions for spawning and survival of the larvae were not the most suitable.

And so, once I sit in front of the aquarium, I look at its inhabitants, and I see that a small copy swims next to the adult catfish! That is, already grown up and painted fry Panda Cory!! My wife and I were in a pleasant shock from what we saw! How and when he appeared, and most importantly, how he survived, remained a mystery to me. At the bottom lie a coconut shell and almond leaves, so it's not yet possible to find out how many more fry in the aquarium. I can not even take a picture of it, although I keep a charged camera near the aquarium.

But most importantly, breeding is possible, so we will try again!

Main conditions of keeping:
  • The temperature of 22-26 ° C (71,6-78,8 ° F)
  • The water is neutral or slightly acidic.
  • The size of 5-5.5 (1,96-2,1 inches)
  • Compatibility is a very peaceful fish.
  • Living in flock.
  • Life expectancy in an aquarium is 10 years.
  • Feeding is omnivorous bottom fish.
  • The keeping is not difficult.
  • Breeding - medium complexity.

Useful advice!

I invented the saying that "it's harder than catching zebrafish in an aquarium, maybe just catching catfish of Corydoras". When there are a lot of zebrafish in a common aquarium, only the first fish can be easily caught. Then they sink to the bottom and begin to have problems with catching.

With the corridors in general trouble. Firstly, they are not clearly visible against the background of the bottom, and secondly, they are worn at the speed of light. And in order to catch them from the 200 liter common aquarium, I had to pull out all the stones and snags. The only thing that helped a little bit was the use of two nets. With a little net you pound the fish into a big one.

I read on the Internet that they use special transparent traps for fishing, which they put on the bottom. If not, then they can be made from a plastic bottle. I have no traps yet, but for some reason they did not want to swim in a bottle. Though he lured them there with a delicious moth.

Therefore, if someone has his own tricks on how to catch fish in an aquarium, please write in the comments.

And do not forget - Corydoras needs open air for breathing, so do not leave traps for a long time at the bottom, for example, at night! Fish can suffocate!
