Hornwort (Ceratophyllum) so universal plant for any aquarium, that it can easily be awarded the first place among all aquarium plants. Virtually no such situations in the aquarium, which would not be useful hornwort.
- Want to quickly establish a balance in a new aquarium?
- Sow the viviparous fish to spawn and save the fry?
- Stimulate spawning at Danio Rerio (Danio Rerio)?
- Aquarium without soil, but we need live plants?
- Is there little light in the aquarium and no heater?
- Want to get rid of algae?
All these questions can be answered in one word - hornwort!
Who is hornwort and where did he come from in our aquariums?
Hornwort (Ceratophyllum) Is a perennial aquatic herbaceous plant with a very unusual appearance. Its leaves are more like conifer needles than the leaves of an ordinary plant. And he has no roots. Instead, the plant is capable of releasing special threadlike processes - rhizoids. Hornwort or freely floats in the water column, or hooks on all kinds of underwater objects, and in this way, as it were, takes root. It is so unpretentious that it occurs almost in all corners of the globe - from the tropics and to the Arctic Circle. Is able to survive and feel great, both in very soft water and hard. The same applies to the temperature regime. Carries, as very cold (up to + 5 ° C), and calmly grows in tropical water (+ 25 ° C - + 30 ° C). The only thing, hornwort It does not tolerate a very bright light and from this it can perish.
Hornwort. Where and when is it needed?
Starting a new aquarium.
When starting a new aquarium, it is very important to establish a biological balance in it as soon as possible (What is balance, read on this link). And living plants play a very important role in the process of formation and maintenance of proper chemical equilibrium. But if the rest of the plants need a fairly long time to adapt and start growing, then hornwort begins to grow and "work" almost instantly. This helps to avoid unwanted outbreaks ammonia nitrites и nitrates in a new aquarium. And significantly reduce the time to establish a balance.
Shelter for fry of viviparous fishes.
Of course, for 100% preserving fry of viviparous fish such as guppies (Poecilia reticulata), pecilia (Poecilia), the swordtail fish (Xiphophorous hellerii) and molyesia (Mollienesia), it is better to use special otsadniki. I use the same as in my photo below. He has a special lattice at the bottom, and all fry fall through it during childbirth. The female simply cannot reach and eat them. I bought on Aliexpress. Here link.
But if you do not have an otsadnik, and the fish is about to give birth, and you want to save the fry, just set it apart and put a lot hornwort. The female will become more difficult to move around and the fry will have good chances to survive.
Hornwort. Assistant in the fight against algae.
У hornwort there is an excellent feature. It is practically not subject to fouling by undesirable algae. Plus, it grows very fast. In a month, under favorable conditions, it can increase to a meter in length. Thanks to this, he will eat all the nitrates that algae like to eat so much. And they simply will not have a chance to grow in your aquarium.
Nitrates in aquarium!
Use in an aquarium without soil.
Sometimes we, for whatever reason, cannot use the soil in an aquarium. For example, in a spawning or aquarium with fry. There we constantly have to monitor the cleanliness and often clean up the remains of the vital activity of the fish. Soil in such situations makes this process very difficult. But, since hornwort there are no roots, then the soil is not needed. We can easily use it there. And siphonize the bottom, it will not interfere.
Hornwort. Stimulation of spawning.
Some fish, for example, zebrafish, need a sprig of a live plant to stimulate spawning. Hornwort fits perfectly. As we do, you can see in the video clip on Youtube.
Use in an aquarium with adverse conditions.
Рclover so unpretentious that it will not perish and will grow, even in conditions that are not suitable for other plants. Where there is no heater or additional lighting.
My tricks and tips when using hornwort in aquarium!
Usually everyone wants to hornwort grew out of the ground with a beautiful herringbone. But, since it does not have roots, it is rather difficult to achieve such an effect. If you just try to bury the ends of the plant in the ground or press them down with a stone, then nothing happens. Over time, the roots rot and it will again float to the surface.
Plus, if you have a powerful filter, it will churn the plant in one corner.
But I thought up 2 easy ways how to get out of this situation.
Method one. With the help of a sucker.
For the first method, we need any aquarium sucker and plastic clamp.
Attach the clamp to the suction cup in any convenient way so that you get a small plastic ring. Threading twig hornwort and fastened to the glass. In any place we need and at any depth. It looks very beautiful. Especially when making the background. The photo below is a rear view for better understanding.
The second way. Ceramic rings.
The principle is the same as in the first method. The difference is that instead of a sucker, we use ceramic rings. They can be slightly buried in the ground, leaving a plastic ring outside. Or even use in an aquarium without a primer. Can be mounted anywhere in the aquarium. The downside is that you can not adjust the depth of the dive.
With these methods, the tips do not rot and the hornwort does not float. Brilliantly!
Hornwort so universal that it simply must be available to any aquarist! Highly recommend!
