What is a filter and what is it for in an aquarium in general?
Recently a friend and member of our group in Facebook, bought a Boyu aquarium on 80 liters. And he put up photos asking how to correctly and how to fill the internal filter. The fact is that there was no instruction for the aquarium in the box. There were only many different fillers for the filter (See photo). And the official website of the manufacturer www.boyuaquarium.com did not work at that time.
With the filter for the Boyu aquarium, we eventually figured out a joint effort. But there was an idea. Analyze and organize information about what internal filters are in general for which they are needed.
And they are needed, as the name suggests, for Filtering water. But when compared with other water filters, for example for the purification of drinking water. That filter for the aquarium is a rather complicated product. After all, the filter in the aquarium is needed not only to mechanically purify the water, but also to maintain the biological balance in the aquarium. link.) And the surface of the filter element is best suited for occupancy by useful bacteria. After all, only in one sponge of cylindrical form and long 15 centimeters, there are as many bacteria as on 1 square meter of soil. And the area of one liter of ceramic rings for biofiltration is 600-800 meters square meters. I looked in my aquariums and found a fairly good collection.
Internal filter for the aquarium. What kinds exist.
Only in our kitchen I found 7 different models. And each filter can be called unique in its design and principle of operation.
Let's start from simple to complex.
1. Airlift aquarium filter.
This is one of the smallest and simplest aquarium filters. If you delve into its name in English, you will immediately understand the principle of its work. The name stands for “Air Carriage”. That is, it works due to water, which is sucked in and passed through a sponge using air. And for its operation we need only an air compressor. Such a filter is very cheap. But if you plan to breed fish, then such a filter is simply obliged to be in your house. I tried many different options, and this is the only model that can be safely used in breeding. There are no open holes in it. And if you properly adjust the air flow, then even the larvae of fish do not suck in it. Highly recommend! I bought on aliexpress for this link.
Advanced airlift filter for the aquarium.
Absolutely the same operating principle as the previous model. This filter differs in size, air supply design and mounting method. It can have either one or two sponges. And attached to the inside wall of the aquarium with the help of suction cups. Sponges can be very large and suitable for fairly solid aquariums. It all depends on the power of the air compressor. On Aliexpress sold for a penny. Here link.
Miniature turbine filter for a small aquarium.
For this type of filter, an air compressor is no longer needed. It already has a built-in motor that pumps water through the filter housing. You can fill the filter with anything, with a sponge and ceramic rings. Plus, you can configure the aeration of water in the aquarium. Usually sold complete with small aquariums. Attached to the inner glass of the aquarium.
But not very suitable for fry. Firstly, it has rather large openings for water intake. And you need to additionally wear a nylon mesh in order to avoid sucking fry. And secondly, they can get stuck in the narrow space between the filter and the glass.
Filter AQUAEL ASAP.
Very interesting solution in the design of this filter. The motor is at his bottom and as it pushes water through the compartment with fillers. Very convenient to maintain. Nothing gets into the aquarium when cleaning it. All dirt remains in a confined space. You can fill with sponges and ceramic rings. Plus, this filter can be used in the terrarium. After all, for his work, only 5 centimeters of water is enough. Here is the official link on him. Recommend! Due to the rapid flow of water at the filter outlet, an additional air aerator in the aquarium is not needed. But not suitable for fry because of the large holes for water intake.
Filter AQUAEL TURBO for large aquariums.
This filter is from Aquael already combines two types of water treatment. Sponge and reservoir for any kind of filler such as ceramic rings, volcanic lava, bio balls or activated carbon. Plus, this filter provides aeration of air with a regulator of force and direction of flow. It works for a year without stopping. Since there are no holes in it, it can be used without problems in an aquarium with fry. I recommend to everyone!
Filter bottom RESUN.
After purchasing the RESUN DM-400 aquarium kit, I discovered a very interesting filter model for an aquarium. (As I launched the aquarium in 2 hours, read on link ). The manufacturer positions it as a bottom filter for the aquarium. Where on the bottom, a special grating is installed under the ground. And the filter itself is located in the lid of the aquarium and is connected to the grate by a plastic tube. And the water intake, together with the remains of the vital activity of fish, occurs directly from the ground. Bottom filters are not currently used in aquariums. Because they take the nutrients directly from the roots of the plants. And with a very difficult maintenance of the lower part in case of breakage or clogging. So I just remade the water intake pipe.
But the location of the filter in the top cover of the aquarium, just a brilliant idea. Firstly, the appearance of the aquarium without a filter is very attractive. Secondly, the free useful space for fishes is released. And thirdly, this filter is very convenient to maintain. All fillers are in a separate container and nothing gets into the aquarium when cleaning. And I wonder why other manufacturers have not thought of it before. For example, the famous German manufacturer Juwel.
Built-in filter for aquarium Juwel Vision 180.
In terms of functionality, this internal filter is more similar to the external one. Has quite a lot of space for filling with various filter materials. There are simply a huge number of them in the manufacturer's assortment. I also added mine. In nylon bags. For example, charcoal to remove drugs from the aquarium. But due to its large size, the filter takes up an entire corner of the aquarium. And I would really like it to be horizontal and built into the top cover, like on the previous model. the filter also provides for air aeration. But although the force of the flow is regulated, the force is such that it blows plant and fish, even at a minimum. And I have been solving this problem for several months. First, I used a plastic cup with holes, put on the filter outlet. It works, but it doesn't look very aesthetically pleasing. Then I found a solution and put in a universal flute for filters Aquael. How it looks can be seen in the video below. Plus, this filter has rather large openings for water intake. And even adult zebrafish sometimes swim there. But this filter cleans the aquarium for five points out of five. And quite easy to maintain. I just change my sintepon every week. To save, I buy cheap for this link. And the rest of my sponge once in 3 months and then not all at once. Plants and fish in the aquarium are satisfied and constantly spawn. And chemical indicators of water are always normal!
